Oxford dictionary..? Hi, English is my second language.I am now in North America and would stay here for long. So far, I have been using "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary". I found this dictionary quite good. I just realized that the pronounciation keys and usage etc in this dictionary would be Britain-based, whereas what I need is some American-based dictionary. Would sbdy pl suggest some popular American-based dictionary... Thanks

Is there any work in Arabic similar to the Oxford English Dictionary? The OED is a 22 volume historical dictionary. It includes the etymology of the word, the history of usage of the word, such as when it was first introduced to the language, its roots, all the meanings the it has ever had, and several quotations from literary sources. Oh and it also includes the meaning of word parts. It’s very, very comprehensive. Is there anything like this in Arabic? I’m particularly interested in classical Arabic. If there is such a work, can you provide a link to an online bookstore where it is available? Faisal, are you still stalking me?
Has any other non-native speaker of English tried to memorize the Oxford English Dictionary? I'm starting to feel that I should know all the words I encounter in different texts, so I've started memorizing the whole dictionary so I won't need to consult it continually, which makes the process of reading both slow and boring. But I wonder whether I'll be able to remember all the words when I finish memorizing after six months. Has anyone else tried it? Did it work?
How do I cite the Oxford English Dictionary? I have to cite the OED in a paper, but I can't find out how to do it. I don't have the online edition, but rather a downloaded version that I bought. I can't find out how to cite it anywhere. Chicago style, my apologies. I've referenced things before and understand how it works, I wouldn't be done three years of university otherwise. It's just this OED program that I have no idea how to cite.
What is the longest word within the Oxford English Dictionary? I found out that the longest place name in the world is in Thailand. AND I found out that supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is a legitimate word (on Dictionary.com), but it's not in the OED. What is the longest word in the dictionary? Serious answers, please. I don't want to hear "smiles", because there's a mile between the "S"'s. That joke went out like the dinosaurs.

Who is reponsible for choosing what words go into the dictionary? Specifically the Oxford english dictionary? It was just one of those thoughts you have, when you've not got alot on. But thinking about it, is it actually someone's career? I mean, the English language is one of the most stupid languages i know - there are so many irregularities, slang terms, stupid terms, and things that make me appreciate English being my first langauge. I tried learning Spanish and that was hard enough. But back to the point, someone has to be reponsible for choosing to put the word conk or barmy into the dictionary.................
What new words would you add to the Oxford English Dictionary? New words to be added are WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) of footballers, and also "McJob", to denote a low-paid exploitative job for 17 year olds, so why now "Mc Wee" or "Mc Poo" as well, for when you only use their loo? What words would you like added to see in the OED?
Russian Oxford Dictionary? I've been wanting to buy a big Russian dictionary, however I can't decide upon which one to get. I'm thinking about either the Oxford Russian Dictionary, or the Concise Oxford Russian Dictionary. Which one do you recommend? Do you recommend either of them? Have any other suggestions about a different Russian Dictionary I should check out? Thanks!
According to "Oxford Dictionary" does "Anxious" ONLY mean "fearful"? Can someone confirm for me that the "Oxford Dictionary" (please dont use other online dictionaries since i already have) define "anxious" to only mean "fearful" (derriving from the word anxiety) and nothing more? I always figured that most poeple who used the word "axious" were using it imporperly and would use it to mean "eager and excited" while it should mean "fearful" derriving from the word "anxiety". So i checked dictionaries and noticed that it could be both...seems very contradictory...but can someone tell me, what does the definitive dictionary: Oxford Dictionary say about this word....from my quick findings i notice that "Anxious" can only mean fearful NOT eager.... can anyone give me a detailed response and not a quick cut-paste from any online dictionary since i have already checked them?
