How does one write a dictionary for commercial purposes? Can you use other dictionaries as a basis? I am interested in publishing dictionaries of philosophy, psychology, medicine, law, religion, mathematics, business, science, foreign language to English and English to foreign language dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms, antonyms, idioms, etymologies, rhyming and alliteration, etc. I am contemplating using out of print books older than 75 years or 100 years as the source materials as these are as I understand in the Public Domain. I would like to know the necessary methods for writing such dictionaries -- documenting the sources used, the legal concerns in writing such reference works, staying within the bounds of academic and publishing business customs and practices. Any references that might help in these matters would be greatly appreciated. I understand that part of my research will have to be into lexicography itself. I would like to publish these dictionaries and other reference works for both commercial purposes and for Open Content/Public Domain uses.

Question about ID/Creationsim in Science class? The definition of Intelligent Design is "The assertion or belief that physical and biological systems observed in the universe result from purposeful design by an intelligent being rather than from chance or undirected natural processes." The definition of Creationism is "the doctrine that matter and all things were created, substantially as they now exist, by an omnipotent Creator, and not gradually evolved or developed." The definition for Science is "systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation." OR "Any of the branches of natural or physical science." Now these definitions are right from dictionary. These definitions show that ID+Creationism are in *NO* way natural or involved by natural forces. So by definition they are *NOT* scientific. So how can anyone reasonably say they should be taught in science class? Isn't that like saying we should teach Algebra in English Literature? gzlakewood> I suggest you read the definitions again. and again try to understand that science deals with the natural....not the supernatural......so no they are in no way possible to the imagination without lying to oneself valid science questions Steve H> While I agree they are great topics of discussion..I don't think they belong in science class any more than astrology, tarot, etc belong in there......becaise science is for science and philosophy is for misc ideas

Science is a religion, is this statement no more than a desperate attack to avoid real issues? I mean, when some one makes this ridiculous statement isn't it obviously based on misinterpretations and desperation aimed to bring people down to their level. Oh yeah science is a religion, and if you aren't part of it you don't get any medicine or get to use technology that it created (sarcasm). And the people seem to have no basis for the statement. They love the dictionary definition that says something followed with faith and ardor. Well great, but a few people religiously following science doesn't make science a religion. A few Christians liking the devil doesn't make all Christianity devil worship. Evolution isn't a religion either. Everything that can't be explained perfectly but is still probable isn't a religion. If so, then every time see evidence then make a logical assumption you are following a religion. At least evolution is based on evidence and fact and is looking for answers, not just trying to clog up brains and prevent people from looking deeper than an old book. People also seem to think this matters at all. Even if it was a religion, it would be a religion that returns definate and beneficial REAL results and progresses and makes things better, which would make it the best most successful religion ever. Stop making cheap shots because you're feeling insecure.

What does paralithic mean? (soil science term).? I've checked dictionaries and done web searches but haven't found a definition. In my web searches I've found many instances where it is used as "paralithic bedrock" or "paralithic contact." How does "paralithic" compare with "lithic" or "densic"?
Can we really call evolution science? Evolution is not science. I'll give you an exact quote from a dictionary, what the word SCIENCE means. Science: 1. Originally, knowledge 2. Systematized knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimentation. 3. A branch of knowledge, especially one concerned with establishing and systematizing facts, principles, and methods. If you say evolution is science your going against the meaning. Evolution is not fact, it's theory. The definition says that science is observation and facts. Is evolution observation and fact?! I don't think so! If you think creationism is a bunch of crud then conferm that thought after you take a look at this website: http://www.answersingenesis.org/home/area/qa.asp For everyones information, I'm home schooled. That explains why I'm so "stupid"
Does anyone on the Left realize that words have actual definitions? They throw around words like "fascism", "dictator", "treason", and "lie", but yet what they're describing never seems to match the definitions of those words found in political science texts, dictionaries, or the Constitution. I guess we can't expect too much from people who think, "We don't like him" is an impeachable offense. Collateral: Call me crazy, but I'd say quoting definitions from the dictionary is a much less pathetic act than pulling them out of your overused anuses for partisan gain. My personal fave was, "That depends on what you mean by 'is'." Remember that little gem? Dolen: my question contains no lie, and yes I'm aware that the definition of "treason" is found in Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States. How does that definition and the one favored by liberals ("Plame-gate") have anything in common? Calee: if the Dems were baseball players, how far down in the minors would they find themselves, considering they're 3-for-10 in presidential elections since 1968, and 1-for-7 in congressional ones since 1994? ALunaticFriend: in that case, you'd love my quixotic struggle against another abortion of a word. A "homophobe" would exhibit an irrational fear of himself. I don't know who concocted the current "definition" thereof, but he's no friend of the language. Dolen: Treason, high crimes, and other misdemeanors, my friend. Unlike his libidinous predecessor, the President has committed none of the above.

Is science just policically correct religion? It seems to me that many aspects of religion are overlapped by science and that many "theories" are preach as fact by teachers who believe very strongly in them. How does this compare with teaching religion in schools? The following definitions of religion were found at dictionary.com. Definition 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. Definition 2: something one believes in and follows devotedly.
Why do people try to reconcile the biblical creation account with modern science? There does not need to be any reconcilition. The purpose of the creation account is not scientific or how to. And I quote: [in regards to COSMOGONY] "Futhermore, Hebrew thinking on the subject was mythopoeic rather than intellectual, issuing more out of imaginative fancy than out of logical inference or disciplined inquiry. Accordingly, all efforts to reconcile biblical cosmogony with modern science rest, in the last analysis, on a fundamental misunderstanding of its purport and intent and on a naive confusion between the two distinct forms of mental activity." Source: Gaster. T. "Cosmogony" The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible. Abingdon Press: Nashville: 1963. (Page 702) I am interested in Atheist response to this quote specificially. I am a Christian. I hold to this view of the Creation account. I personally approach the creation accounts in the Bible from a theological, literary, and cultural perspective.

Political Science Majors Please Help? Does the party of the winning presidential candidate normally gain or lose seats in Congress? Also, does anyone have a textbook definition for the term "Foreign Policy". I am not looking for a simple dictionary term. I am looking for a Political Science book term or other complex definitions.
About Science? Is there any good science dictionary or encyclopedia site where I can look up a word that is related to science? And the definition can be easily understood?
what does displacement mean? in science? i'm talking about when you fill a bathtub up to the brink and then someone steps in and water spills out. i know this is displacement but what is a definition? please don't say something from a dictionary that will not make ANY sense at all to me. thanks :)
Why do people who post questions on this website not know how to spell? I clearly have no idea what they are teaching you in schools these days. In my youth I may not have been the sharpest pencil in the case intellectually, but at least I always knew how to spell words correctly. Spelling is not akin to rocket science you know. Try picking up a dictionary and reading it once in a while. You might learn something. Or of course, you could always try using the spell-check facility on this website. Phew! I'm glad I've got that off my chest.

What is the definition of the political offense known as "laissez majeste"? Yes, I know it's French. I also know that it is used in English without translation in the same way the phrase "laissez faire" is used and understood without being translated into English. I also know it has something to do with anti-royalism or committing an offense against a royal. I'm confused because "laissez" means roughly "allow" or "let" and "majeste" means majesty, so I don't know what's so anti-royalist about allowing royals. All Internet searches turn up sophisticated people who already know what it means talking about it with such erudition that I can never hope to grasp it's specific and exact legal meaning, which I cannot find in any dictionary or encyclopedia French or English. Only answer if you are highly educated in Political Science and are absolutely certain of the correct answer. This is serious business. I get it wrong and some nasty cultural misunderstanding may ensue. Please help.
Do you like this? Per Annabella: the Oulipo in N+7. You will need a dictionary for this one...? The replacement words are the 7th noun in the dictionary after the substantive noun from each line. It is not my fault that A R S E fit the formula, replacing arrow. Also, be sure to look up sigmoidoscopy... ***** OUCH! I shot an “A.R.S.E.” into the air, It fell to Earth Science, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew, the sigmoidoscopy Could not follow it in its Flight Line. I breathed a songstress into the air, It fell to Earth Science, I knew not where; For who has sigmoidoscopy so keen and strong, That it can follow the Flight Line of song? Long, long afterward, in an oarlock, I found the “A.R.S.E.”, still unbroke; And the songstress, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a Frier. *****
